Achillea, also referred to as yarrow, is flowering perennial part of the Asteraceae (aster, daisy, sunflower) family.   While frequently grown as a flower, achillea is also used as an herb.  It is native to North America, Europe and western Asia.  It has hairy leaves with a strong scent (similar to chamomile) and tiny, flat clusters of white, yellow, pink, orange or red flowers.  Achillea makes a nice addition to any flower or herb garden.  Achillea is easy to care for and grows to a height of 18 to 36 inches tall.  It blooms from mid-summer until mid-fall.

Achillea can be planted outdoors at any time when the weather will be regularly above 62 degrees.  However, it is recommended that you begin planting indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost.  Gently press the seeds into their starter pots.  Use a tray to hold them.  Water them by pouring water into the tray.  The soil will draw water up to the seeds.  Keep the seeds moist and use a grow light.  The seeds should germinate within 14 to 21 days from planting.

Once the soil is warm enough and your seedlings reach a height of 3 to 4 inches.  Locate area of your garden with full sun.  While achillea can tolerate a variety of soils, it prefers a light, well-drained soil.  You mix in compost or topsoil if you have particularly heavy soil.  It is a good idea to loosen the soil with a shovel or hoe either way.  Space seedlings 12 to 24 inches apart.  If the plants grow too tall, you may need to stake them.  Yarrow should be fully established in 1 to 2 years.

In addition to seeding, you can also share your achillea by dividing the plants.  Divide every 3 to 4 years to maintain plant health.  Carefully dig up plants, and gently pull individual plants apart.  Be sure to replant them immediately to keep the roots from drying out.  Press the soil firmly around the replanted achillea to anchor it and water.  As they continue to grow and spread, you can thin out your garden by sharing your achillea plants with friends and family.

Achillea doesn’t require much care or watering once it is established.  It is, however, susceptible to mold and mildew, particularly in humid areas.   Mold you can treat with a fungicide, but if your plant succumbs to mildew, cut off and discard the infected parts.  Achillea can also become infested with spittlebugs.

Achillea is beautiful when added to fresh or dried flower bouquets.  White achillea looks a little like baby’s breath when paired with roses, but it also goes well with lavender and calendula.  Yellow achillea looks beautiful when paired with sunflowers.  Achillea can also be used in making potpourri, season wreaths, and other crafts.  As an herb, it is used to treat gastrointestinal issues, among other things.
