Learn how to grow garden fresh vegetables so that you can give your family healthy food and save a ton of money in the process! If you grow your own vegetables, you know exactly what kinds of chemicals have or have not been used on them. You also know who and what has touched your produce and you won't have to worry about an E coli outbreak on your spinach or your celery. You control what you grow.
We offer easy planting instructions, growing guides, harvesting directions, and preparation suggestions. Growing your own veggies is much easier than you think and most vegetables do not require a great deal of growing space.
You can grow some of them in pots on your deck. Just buy draining containers and potting soil and plant seeds in the city as long as you provide sunlight and water as needed. So if you have a city apartment without a yard, you can still grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, and more. Container gardening is growing in popularity.
In fact, some of our larger seed orders go to customers who live in New York City. Remember the TV show Green Acres from the 1960s? Oliver and Lisa Douglas lived in New York City on Park Avenue. He was an attorney but longed to be a farmer so he grew vegetables out on his patio overlooking Manhattan. Then they moved to a farm in Hooterville out in the country and it turned out that he never could grow a decent crop. LOL!
If you have a small yard like we do, take heart. You can grow veggies in small plots or raised beds in your yard. David has created raised beds in various places in our backyard and has grown everything imaginable in it, from large sunflowers, corn, and green beans to onions, carrots, and turnips. Don't forget the salad...David grows various kinds of lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and dill.
Root vegetables take up more room than anything else, like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, beets, turnips, and parsnips. Yes, David has grown all of these in our backyard. Enjoy choosing which types of garden fresh vegetables you will grow this year.
