GROWING DELPHINIUM

This page talks about growing delphinium flower plants.

This page talks about growing delphinium flower plants.

Delphiniums are unique because the florals look like spikes.  The petals come in shades of blue, pink, white, and purple.  These florals are popular in cottage-style and cutting gardens.

Although these florals are a favorite to many, they are challenging to grow.  Delphiniums thrive best in cool summers, and are not successful in hot, dry summers.  Delphiniums also do not fare well with sudden gusts of wind or rain.

Before planting, choose a location in your flower bed that receives full sun-light and well-drained soil.  Also, make sure you have your delphiniums in a location that provides shelter from strong winds.  Once a location is selected, mix in 2-4 inches of compost.

Delphiniums are difficult to grow from seed, so start them indoors in trays or containers 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost.  When you’re ready to plant the seedlings, dig a hole twice the diameter of the plant’s container.  Be careful to ensure the root ball is level with the soil.

After planting, apply water, and continue to water your delphiniums freely, and add a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.  It’s imperative the soil should never dry out.

Delphiniums will need support once they reach a height of 12 inches.  Be sure to add stakes to the delphiniums.

For the best quality flower spikes, when shoots reach 3 inches high, thin the delphinium down to 2-3 shoots a plant.  After delphiniums have finished blooming, cut the flower stalks down to the ground to help new flower stalks to provide.  Delphiniums will survive cold days and light frosts.

Pick your delphiniums to add a touch of elegance to your floral arrangements.

Enjoy your delphiniums and happy gardening!
