Here is a page on growing dent corn in your backyard garden.
Dent Corn is named for its dented kernels-there is a small indentation at the crown of each kernel. Dent corn is a grain corn that’s great to use for cornmeal, polenta, grits and roasting.
Dent corn does best with rich, fertile soil. To add nutrients to the soil add compost or well-rotted manure in the fall. You can begin planting your dent corn after the last frost date (the soil should have a temperature of at least 65 F, anything below 55 F will not allow dent corn to germinate.
Plant your corn seeds 1/2 inch deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows 30-36 inches apart. When the plants get to approximately 3-4 inches tall, thin to 8-12 inch spacing.
Corn feeds heavily on nitrogen, and will most likely need several doses of fertilizer in order to have successful yields. Be sure to constantly look for signs of nutrient deficiency-if the leaves have a purple tinge, the corn plants are lacking phosphorus. If the leaves are pale green, there is a nitrogen deficiency.
When it comes to harvesting, corn should only be harvested when you’re ready to eat it because once corn is picked; it starts to lose its flavor within the first 24 hours. To check for ripeness when the silks have turned brown, and are damp, pull back the husk partially and puncture a kernel. If a clear liquid spurts out, the corn isn’t ready, but if a milk liquid spurts out, the corn is ready, and should be picked immediately unless using it to grind or for feed. Then you will wait until the husk turn brown.
Dent corn comes in a number of colors from yellow, white to red and blue.
