This page gives instructions on growing pickling cucumbers.

Pickling cucumbers are popular for being turned into pickles.  They grow just like a regular cucumber, although they are smaller.  Pickling cucumbers are a vining plant, and will grow on a fence or cucumber trellis.

Before planting, prepare your soil.  Cucumbers should be planted in well-drained soil, and will need fertilizer high in nitrogen before planting, but when flowers begin to bloom, switch to a more balanced fertilizer.  Giving the cucumbers consistently will help the health of the pickling cucumber plant, and will give it a more successful harvest.  Over all, you soil for pickling cucumbers should have a pH of 5.5.

Plant your pickling cucumber seeds 1.5 inches deep 2-3 inches apart.  If you are planting in hill, plant four-five seeds per hill.  Be sure to water your pickling cucumber seeds on planting day, and every 2-3 days until they germinate.

Pickling cucumbers grow quickly, and should be picked on a regular basis to promote the development of new cucumbers.  Be careful to pick the cucumbers before they get too big.  If the cucumbers become overripe on the vine, the development of new cucumbers will slow, or the plant will stop bearing more fruit.

You can eat your pickling cucumbers, or turn them into pickles!

Enjoy and happy gardening!
