Poppies are very vibrant wildflowers that are attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Poppy flowers grow over a foot tall, and have one bloom per stem.
Poppy seeds should be planted in the garden in the fall/winter because they require a period of exposure to the cold be they’ll germinate. To sow poppy seeds, because of their tiny size, they just need to be sprinkled along the surface of where you’re planting. After seedlings appear in the spring, you can separate your poppy flowers to a distance of 6-12 inches apart.
If you’re planting your poppies from transplants, plant them in the summer before the plant blooms. Dig a hole bigger than the root-ball of your poppy plant, and place the root in the hold. Loosely fill in the soil-the end result should be the poppy plant should be at the same level as it was in the pot. Water your poppy flowers thoroughly after planting.
Poppy flowers require full sunlight and well-drained soil. Cut off the dead flower heads to promote new blooms. Poppy flowers have a short-bloom span, so plant different varieties of poppies in order to keep the colorful flowers in your garden year-round!
Enjoy your poppy flowers and happy gardening!
