The page provides written and visual instructions on growing scabiosa.
Scabiosa, also known as pincushion flower, is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Scabiosa is considered to be an annual and a perennial depending on which variety you decide to grow! It grows from summer to fall to a height of 6-30 inches in the following colors: blue, cream, lilac, red, yellow, and purple/black.
Scabiosa seeds can be started inside 2 weeks before the last spring frost, or you can plant them directly into the ground following the last frost. Space annuals 10-12 inches apart and space perennials 14-18 inches apart. Annuals can be planted in the spring in cool locations or in autumn in warm locations. If planted in spring or fall, perennials always need to be planted in warm areas.
Before planting, make sure you choose a location with good soil drainage, and full sunlight. The soil should have a pH of 6.5-8. Add humus to the soil to keep it moist.
In order to keep the soil moist, water regularly. Add mulch with bark to help maintain the moisture in the soil. Once your scabiosa begins to grow, you may need to find ways to give it the flowers extra support and protection from the wind. Be sure to deadhead the flowers that are no longer blooming to encourage the growth of more blooms. When autumn weather hits, be sure to cut the perennials down to the ground, and divide the plants regularly.
Enjoy your scabiosa and happy gardening!
