The page provides written and visual instructions on growing spilanthes.

Spilanthes is described as a toothache plant because of the numbing effect it has on the mouth when it’s ingested.  Spilanthes have yellow, 1-inch olive-shaped petals and a red center.  Spilanthes bloom from June through September, and grow only to a height of 12-15 inches. Spilanthes are great to grow as a border, or to grow along with other yellow or red flowers.

Before planting, choose a location with full sun or partial shade with moderately moist soil.  Spilanthes will not thrive in saturated or boggy soil.  Sow your spilanthes seeds 10-12 inches apart.  Water regularly when needed.

Spilanthes does best in spring and summer temperatures, but will not thrive in cold temperatures.

Chewing on the flowers from spilanthes are great for toothaches because the blooms will cause a local anesthetic effect, and will help ease the pain of toothaches!  It’s always great to have some around in case you can’t see your dentist for a few days!

The flowers of spilanthes have also been used as a urinary antiseptic.  The indigenous people of the tropics used the blooms to treat malaria.  The active ingredient in spilanthes that gives it its healing powers is spilanthol.

Enjoy your spilanthes and happy gardening!
