Statice is primarily admired as a garden flower, but is also used as an herb to treat dysentery and other ailments. Statice grows from early summer until the first frost. Statice comes in many different color combinations, but mainly white, purple, pink, yellow, blue, and apricot. The stems grow 1-2 feet tall, and the foliage consists of 5-10 inches with lobed leaves.
Once the last spring frost has passed, sow statice seeds directly into the ground 18-24 inches apart in full sun, and rich, well-drained soil. Add compost to the soil during planting time, and in mid-August, add an all-purpose (10-10-10) fertilizer.
To dry statice flowers, cut the flower in order to leave a 12-18-inch stem when the flower bracts are ¾ open. The remaining bracts of the flower will open and dry. To dry the flowers quicker, hang the statice upside down in a dark room with good air circulation. Statice will generally dry in 7-10 days. In order to keep the colors vibrant, keep the flowers out of direct sunlight.
Enjoy your statice and happy gardening!
