Strawflowers, a member of the daisy family, are known for their straw-like blooms in red, orange, pink, purple, yellow, and white. Strawflowers are valued for its resistance to heat and drought.
Before planting, choose a sunny location in your garden with well-drained soil. After the last frost has passed, add in 2-3 inches of compost, and then sprinkle seeds on the surface of the soil. Give the seeds a light water, but don’t cover the seeds!
Once the seedlings reach a height of 10-12 inches, thin the flowers until they are 2-3 inches tall. This will help with air circulation and prevent mildew, or other moisture-related diseases.
Strawflower require very little maintenance during the growing season (summer until the first frost). Strawflower only needs water the soil feels slightly dry. Strawflowers can rot in wet conditions, so avoid wet and soggy soil to keep your flowers healthy. The best option is to water with a hose or drip system in order to keep the foliage dry. Also during the season, pinch off faded flower in order to promote continual blooming!
Enjoy your strawflowers and happy gardening!
