Growing succulents comes fairly easy in Texas. When I hear the word succulents, I think of Arizona cactus plants that stand tall and proud with huge stickers. But what are they really?
The word "succulence" means swollen or fleshy appearance due to water storage.
So succulents are actually plants that have some parts that are thicker than most plants to store extra water in dry and drought conditions, like we have been having for the past few years here in San Antonio.
They are grown as ornamental plants because of the way they look but some are also useful such as the aloe plant. The liquid that the aloe vera plant produces is great for reducing the pain of burns and sunburn. We sell aloe arborescens seeds which can be made into a juice used to detoxify and provide energy.
We have aloe vera plants, along with other succulents in our greenhouse. We bring new succulent plants into our physical store in San Antonio each week to sell at 7715 Tezel Drive. If you are in or around San Antonio, please stop by and check them out, along with whatever seasonal plants we have for sale.
Below, David transplants some aloe vera pups for the first time in June of 2014, this past weekend.
David has recently added several types of aloe and cactus seeds to our store for you to enjoy in your yard. Below is the list of what we have.
Aloe Arborescens This plant is from South Africa and can grow up to eight feet tall. It produces a large red flower in the fall. It is used to treat sunburn and cuts, along with advanced stages of cancer.
Aloe Cape This aloe is also from South Africa and can grow over six feet tall with red flowers. It is used for stomach medicines and in hydrating lotions.
Aloe Peglerae This aloe is from South Africa and the plant itself is purple instead of green with red flowers.
Aloe Quiver Tree This aloe seed actually grows into a very tall and very strange-looking tree. It can grow up to 30 feet tall and it can live for 200 years.
