The page provides written and visual instructions on growing swiss chard.
Although Swiss chard appears to be of the leafy greens family, it’s actually a member of the beet family. Swiss chard grows well in both cool and warm temperatures.
Before planting your Swiss chard, prepare the soil by adding 1 cup of 5-10-10 fertilizer for every 20 ft. in a single row. Swiss chard seeds should be planted 2-3 weeks before the last spring frost date, and 40 days before the first fall frost date. When planting Swiss chard, you’ll want to plant the seeds at 10+day intervals for a month.
Sow the Swiss chard seeds ½-3-4 inch deep 18 inches apart in single rows 10-18 inches apart. Plant 8-10 seeds per foot of row.
After planting, be sure to water your Swiss chard evenly to better their chances of growth-increase your watering during the dry summer season. Adding mulch will also help the Swiss chard to conserve moisture.
When the plants reach 3-4 inches tall, thin them to 4-6 inches apart (9-12 inches if the plants are larger). To help the Swiss chard thrive, cut the plants when they reach a foot tall. If the Swiss chard plants become overgrown, they’ll start to lose their flavor.
Swiss chard can be harvested once the plants are 6-8 inches tall. Cut off the outer leaves 1-1 1-2 inches above the ground with a sharp knife-doing this will allow for continual leaf growth.
The ribs of the chard leaves can be cut off and eaten as asparagus. The rest of the leaves can be eaten as greens, and can be eaten raw or cooked.
