The page provides written and visual instructions on growing verbena.
Verbena is great to grow during the summer season because the flower is tolerant of heat, humidity, and drought. In fact, verbena thrives best when it’s planted in a sunny location (verbena needs at least 8-10 hours of sun each day) with dry or well-drained soil! Verbena will never thrive in soggy soil! To help verbena grow in poor soil, mix in compost or moss for added nutrients. Before planting the verbena in your garden, mix in organic material into your planting location.
The blooms of verbena are not drought resistant, however, and need an inch of water per week. A good rule of thumb for avoiding over-watering verbena, only water the flower when the soil is dry.
To grow verbena, you can start the seeds indoors 12-14 weeks before the last spring frost, or sow the verbena seeds directly into the ground during the fall, or early spring.
After your verbena reaches 6 inches tall, add a slow-release fertilizer for nutrients. It’s best to trim the blooms in order for new ones to appear. You may have to trim the plant 1/4th of its height in order for more blooms to appear in 2-3 weeks. Fertilize and water after trimming. Trimming can be repeated as often as needed.
Enjoy the blooms of your verbena and happy gardening!
