Growing Viola Flower Plants

This page talks about growing viola flower plants.

Violas are a unique flower because there are over 500 species of viola flowers!  Violas are great to grow because they are heat and cold tolerant, and can grow in all seasons!

It’s best to grow violas in the cool season or colder climates, and act as a bridge between seasons in warmer seasons.  Violas are capable of self-seeding, but can also be started indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting.  4 weeks before the last spring frost is the best time to transplant your violas.  If violas are being planted in the fall, seeds should be started during mid-summer.

To start the seeds indoors, fill your flats or pots ¼ inch below the top edge with sterile potting mix.  Spread 2-3 seeds in each cell or post, and cover with more potting mix.  Set in a location with a temperature between 65 F and 70 F, and keep the soil moist.  Once the seeds sprout, move the seedlings to a sunny window or under plant lights.  Once the first true leaves appear, the seedlings will be ready to transplant.

Choose a location with a good amount of shade.  Before planting, set the seedlings outdoors for 4 hours the first day, and slowly increase the amount of time they’re outside by 1-2 hours.  This will help condition the violas for the brighter light.  After the seedlings have hardened (approx. 10-14 days), they are ready to be planted into the ground.

Enjoy your violas and happy gardening!
