This page talks about harvesting broccoli seeds.
When choosing a seed for seed production make sure you use an open pollinated type since a hybrid type will not work.
When broccoli is grown for the desire if seeds, let the buds flower.
Each bud will turn into a flower.
Each flower will turn into a 2 to 3 foot long stem.
This steam will then produce seed pods.
The seed pods can have up to 4 to 5 seeds in each pod.
In other words, each plant is capable of producing hundreds of thousands of seeds. It is really a miracle how nature works.
The picture above shows this miracle in action.
Once the seeds are mature, the plant will start to dry out.
Once it is completely dry, The plants are ready to harvest.
(Picture above is a close up of seed pod)
I was watching and waiting for my seeds to be ready. Unknown to me, the birds were watching and waiting as well. Below is what is left after they got finished with my plants. I did not get one seed. I was devastated when I saw this.
You need to cover your plants somehow.
Once the seeds are ready, you cut the stalks and break them down into a container of some sort. The chaff that is mixed with the seeds can be blown out by air. But I was not able to test this since I had no seeds left.
