This page is about an easy and cheap home vegetable garden plan.
I decided to add some raised beds to the outside of my fence. But I did not have any more landscaped timbers to use and did not want to spend any more money than I had to.
As I stood outside the fence pondering this, an idea came to me.
Outside my fence, there is a brush area. Some of it needed to be trimmed back. So, I decided to cut several brush-type trees down and use them.
If these had been oak or mesquite, I would not have cut them down. But eight years ago these were just some little scrub trees with other brush growing around them. So I cleaned up the brush around them and they grew fairly quickly.
Our home garden plans include lots of raised beds in the backyard. We also have a few in our front yard for flowers and small trees. I made raised garden beds along the sides of the house and the fence in the backyard and we grow vegetables and flowers there, changing the location of the vegetable crops every year. You can see two of the beds in the photo below.
We used timbers from Home Depot and brought in fertile soil from a gardening store. We topped the soil off with mulch to keep the moisture in because it gets so hot and dry here in San Antonio in the summer.
Your home garden plan can include some free-standing raised beds. We built some for our mint plants, herbs, flowers, and our small fruit trees, some of which are pictured below.
Above, is a small raised bed housing one of our mini orange trees. Below, we have a rose bush, some spearmint plants, some other herbs and flowers.
Using landscape timbers is cheap and easy. Plus you can take the with you when you move. The timbers will usually last up to 12 years. If you paint them or seal them then they will last a very long time.
If you wanted to make it really look great and have money to spend then using concrete wall blocks will add a really nice look to your garden. Then can be used in a multiple of ways and you can take them with you if you move. They are easy to install.
Fill your raised bed with garden dirt. This can be bought in bulk at a nursery or by the bag at a discount store.
