This page talks about radish health benefits as well as growing the Easter egg radish as a fall crop. It is called Easter egg because of its various colors.
The Easter Egg Radish is multicolor mix. Make beautiful bunches with this mix of red, purple, and white round radishes. Maturing over an extended period of time, they stay crisp and mild even when large. Great fun for children and adults alike.
Around October 2nd, 2015 I will plant my radishes. This is when the Lunar Calendar says root crops should be planted.
Radishes should be ready to harvest in about 30 days.
Although there are many varieties of radishes available, the following nutritional table will evaluate the content in a serving size of approximately 100 grams, which is one whole raw radish.
The low quantities of saturated fat and cholesterol is due to the high water content in radishes (around 90%) and in addition to this, they contain a wide range of essential vitamins and minerals.
Radishes also have both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Some of the most important nutrients and minerals found in radishes include potassium, vitamin C, folate, fiber, manganese, copper, magnesium, calcium, vitamin B6, riboflavin and sodium.
Eating radishes can help with jaundice, piles, urinary disorders, weight loss, cancer prevention, skin problems and even insect bites.
Sow seed in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Successive sowings can be made through May, and again after mid-August. Hot, dry weather hastens bolting and causes the roots to become strong-flavored and woody.
Sow seeds, 3/4 inches apart, 1/4 inch deep, in rows 8-12 inches apart. When plants emerge thin to 3 inches apart. Maintain adequate soil moisture.
Harvest salad-type radishes when small, about the same diameter as a quarter.
Seed Production: For pure seed, isolate from wild and cultivated radishes by a minimum of 1/4 to 1/2 mile.
