This page provides instructions for using a raised strawberry bed. The variety we will be using for the spring season is the Alexandria strawberry.
This variety of strawberry gives delicious, small to medium-sized, deep red berries the first year from midsummer until frost. They are perfect for growing in containers and hanging baskets which means if you don't have a large growing space, you can still have strawberries in your garden.
If you live in the city and you have a small balcony, hang a few pots up or use a rectangular window planter and grow some strawberries! The hanging plants look pretty and will provide fruit as well. In cold weather, you can easily bring the plants in and continue to grow them in your kitchen or on a table by a sunny window.
I recommend that you start these indoors using grow lights about 12 weeks before planing transplanting. Put your germination mix into 4 inch black pots. Sow about 6 seeds to a pot about 1/4 inch deep. Put the pots in leak proof trays. Bottom water the plants until they are about three inches tall. Keep the soil temperature between 60°F and 75°F. Cover or use a heat mat to help maintain this temperature. But do not use both as this will create too much moisture or heat.
At three inches tall, thin out so that you have three plants to a pot.
When the plants are about six inches tall and danger of frost is over, get you plants ready to plant outside by using a hardening off technique of some sort.
Once they are hardening off, your plants should be ready to plant outdoors. Plant where they will get six hours of morning sun.
These strawberries prefer a raised strawberry bed. I have built several in my backyard. I made tiered beds, sort of like pyramids to make it easy to pick the fruit on each layer. A raised bed allows the soil to drain properly so the plants do not get over-watered and subsequently rot in the roots.
