Sweet Pea flowers are colorful, pretty, and smell so delicious. The scent is one of my daughter's favorites over at the bath and body store in lotions and shampoos and I agree with her....It is a great scent!
Now you can have this great scent in your yard and enjoy the way the flowers look while you are enjoying the smell. Sweet Peas are prized for their exceptional fragrance and form.
Also known as Lathyrus odoratus, this lovely vine flower comes from the eastern Mediterranean Sea region, better known as Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Syria.
Before we go any further, you should know that these flowers are not edible. It is toxic when eaten and this includes both the leaves and the flowers so do not use it as a garnish or as a decoration on cakes or cupcakes. It looks pretty, smells great, and will make you, your children, or your pets very sick. Consider this when planting them and when picking them for display in your home!
These delicate flowers take about 85 days to grow and bloom. Prepare your soil by mixing in lots of rich compost. Plant the seed one to two inches deep and at least three inches apart in the early spring once the danger of frost has passed.
Water them well after you plant them and they should germinate in 10 to 15 days. Place lots of mulch over the soil to keep moisture in the ground. The vines will be anywhere from four to six feet long.
If you want to pick the blooms, do it in the morning when the blooms are fresh and the petals are opening. Put them in a vase of water with a drop or two of bleach and some cut flower plant food to keep the blooms looking pretty for days.
These plants are susceptible to aphids so you need to watch for them. Organic Golden Pest Spray Oil works great for this problem.
This particular mix has seeds that bloom into stunning colors of lavender, medium blue, deep burgundy, rose, scarlet, pink, white, and salmon. This variety is early-blooming and does fairly well in extreme heat and drought, like we have had here in San Antonio, Texas for the past two summers.
I would like to point out that no genetic engineering was used in the production of these seeds and that they have an 80% germination rate.
