This page talks about how to buy Texas Grown Seeds. These are seeds that we have saved from plants grown in Texas.
We have been wanting to start a page like this for some time since we are getting more and more seeds from plants we have grown or that local farms have grown here in the Poteet area.
The reason the price is a bit higher is because these seeds have been hand sown, hand harvested and hand cleaned. This process is labor intensive and labor is not cheap, especially at DGS, since we try to pay our Team Members a salary they can live on.
Southern Pea (Cowpea) Pinkeye Purplehull Texas Grown 100 Non-GMO, Open Pollinated Seeds
$6.45
World's most popular cowpea! Early, heavy yielding 24 inch tall bush to semi-vining plants that produce a concentrated set of 6 to 7 inch purple pods. The seeds are cream colored with purple or pink eyes. Lavender flower. Cowpeas, Southern Peas, are the most productive and heat tolerant legumes around. Cowpeas come in bush, vine, tall and short varieties. Great for stopping soil erosion and weed suppression. Cowpeas make an excellent Nitrogen source ahead of fall-planted crops and attract many beneficial insects. Cowpeas grow well on poor land and add lots of primal matter to the soil. Also, they make a good animal fodder crop. Harvest in about 65 days. When we did the germination test, they had a 100% germination rate. We had to purchase a pea/bean sheller to shell the peas. We only have 30 packs of these.
Above is our logo we will be putting on packs of seeds that we have grown in Texas.

All of the variety information on the David's Garden Seeds® website, including the days to
maturity, color and size are based on data from tests done at specific
locations. Many factors, including geographic location, daytime and
nighttime temperatures, the availability of plant nutrients, many unknown climate factors and insects/pest interact to determine a variety's
performance. For information on which varieties will perform best in
your area, we recommend that you contact your local county extension agent or a Master Gardener.
