This is our page on Doomsday Slicing Tomato plants.  It tells how many slicing tomatoes one would need to grow to survive.

The Moskvich Tomato is a delicious slicing tomato. It ripens into a lovely deep red.

One cup of tomatoes contains about 30 calories.  One slicing tomato will usually fill up one cup.  Tomatoes have many wonderful benefits.  You can read about these on the internet.

But you would not want to live on a diet of tomatoes.  Hopefully there will be other things to eat.

A fresh tomato will only last about 7 to 14 days.

So based on a 1200 calorie diet, one would need to consume about 40 cups of tomatoes per day.

One should be able to get at least 40 to 50 tomatoes off one plant.

One plant per day is 365 plants per year.  So we would plant 400 plants for eating and seed production for the following year and reserves.  Always have reserves in the event that something goes wrong with one batch.

You should be able to plant the 400 plants on about 1/4 acre of land.  Don't plant all your seeds at one time.  Space them out so that you can extend your harvest season and are not overworked from from harvesting and processing tomatoes.

There are many YouTube videos that talk about recipes for tomato storage.  There are also many videos that explain how to save seeds from tomatoes.  We will not repeat this information.

You will want to have materials on hand for processing your tomato harvest into salsa, ketchup or canning them.

All of the variety information on the David's Garden Seeds® website, including the days to maturity, color and size are based on data from tests done at specific locations. Many factors, including geographic location, daytime and nighttime temperatures, the availability of plant nutrients, many unknown climate factors and insects/pest interact to determine a variety's performance. For information on which varieties will perform best in your area, we recommend that you contact your local county extension agent or a Master Gardener.
