This is our Doomsday Turnip page. It gives instructions on how many turnip plants are needed to feed one person for a year.
One cup of turnips is about 40 calories. One turnip will fill about two cups. On a 1200 calorie diet you would need about 30 cups of turnips per day. You would need about 15 turnips per day to meet the needs of a 1200 calorie diet. This is about 5475 turnips per year. Let's say 6000 turnips per year for eating, seed processing and trading. You would need about 1/4 of an acre to plant these turnips.
Turnips grow best when the weather is cool. They will last for only about two days when unrefrigerated. They cannot be canned or dried but are best for fresh eating.
Plant your turnips so they do not mature all at the same time.
All of the variety information on the David's Garden Seeds® website, including the days to
maturity, color and size are based on data from tests done at specific
locations. Many factors, including geographic location, daytime and
nighttime temperatures, the availability of plant nutrients, many unknown climate factors and insects/pest interact to determine a variety's
performance. For information on which varieties will perform best in
your area, we recommend that you contact your local county extension agent or a Master Gardener.
